A Virtual Conversation with Harold P. Freeman, M.D. — Ensuring Equitable Access to Care through Patient Navigation
December 19, 2023
In part three, the last of this series, Harold P. Freeman, M.D., discusses the importance of accessible health care for all, moving the conversation from implementation to sustainability within complex health care systems.
Ensuring equitable access to care through patient navigation
Freeman paints the picture of individuals who may need assistance boarding the plane or handling luggage, and the support they receive to ensure their journey is as smooth as possible. Much like patient navigation, these services are in place to mitigate issues of reaching the final destination, ensuring equal opportunities for all. Whether traveling via first class or coach, a flight will land passengers at their final destination at the same time.
“Let's make sure the plane lands for everybody. That's part of access to care, timeliness of care and support for people who need special help.” – Harold P. Freeman, M.D.
Today, patient navigation is an effective intervention used both nationally and globally. However, with growth, comes new challenges to overcome including sustainability and scalability. “The critical problem is not that people don't understand that navigation works, the problem is how do you pay for it,” he said.
For Freeman, the community remains at the core of effective patient navigation. Freeman recognized a critical gap in the care continuum, and through his desire to help one vulnerable population, he ended up helping so many more.
“I wasn't trying to create a national program. I'm trying to help the people in my community. But it turned out, it seemed like it was the right thing to do.”
